At Headlight Consulting Inc. we take the view that the most important application of statistics is not a statistical test, but rather the development of an appropriate graphic which illustrates the relationship one is trying to explain. This is not so say that statistical tests don't have their place. Rather the statistical tests are secondary to the data visualization. It is possible to create a graphic where visually we can see a relationship and we may ask if the relationship is real or not. People are very good at seeing patterns, even if the pattern is built on random data. In those cases a statistical test would be very appropriate to demonstrate that the pattern is real and not due to chance.
